June Activities

Teen Summer Reading Program
Beginning on June 24 students entering grades 6-12 may sign up for the Teen Summer Reading Program at any East Providence library location. Each student will receive a reading chart to keep track of the number of hours he/she reads. Students will earn a free book and raffle ticket after reading for ten hours. After that, students earn a raffle ticket for every five hours of reading. Tickets may be used to enter the raffles of the student’s choice to win gift cards for Borders, itunes, Target and Wal-Mart. The library challenges participants to donate some tickets toward the purchase of a farm animal for a needy village overseas. Raffle winners will be chosen on Thursday August 20. Students may sign up for the program throughout the summer. On Wednesday, June 24 all four libraries will kick off this event by making dazzling beaded jewelry.

Red Cross Babysitting Class
Get certified by the Red Cross. Bring a brown bag lunch. Each session limited to 16 students ages 11-15. Open to EP residents only. Only open to students who have never taken the course. Required registration begins Monday, June 1. *Call 435-1978 to register for one of the following dates:

Read, learn, play during National Gaming Day @ your library. Join hundreds of libraries throughout the country for the first annual celebration of National Gaming @ your library. Like so many other libraries across the country the Weaver Library will offer gaming programs and events suitable for the whole family on Friday November 14 and Saturday November 15, 2008 from 9am-5pm for ages 6 and up. A variety of board games will be available in the Youth Services department including “Pictureka!” donated by the Hasbro Corporation. Join us in attempting to set a national record for the most number of people playing this game at the same time. National Gaming Day @ your library is a national initiative supported by the American Library Association, and 2008 sponsors Hasbro, Top Trumps and Wizards of the Coast.

October Activities

HIP HOP DANCE WORKSHOP Dancer, teacher and choreographer, Connie Murphy, brings us hip-hop style dancing and knowledge of hip-hop culture in this fun workshop. Connie practiced hip-hop dancing with “Off the Curb,” a Hip-Hop Performance Troupe in Newport, RI. In addition to teaching workshops throughout the state of RI, Connie has also attended professional workshops in New York and New Jersey. Art Contest to End Homelessness

Twelve winning entries will be selected for EBCH’s 2009 fundraising calendar and must reflect the following statement:
“Every Child Deserves a Safe place to Call Home and a Warm Bed”

Please submit entries on 8 1/2 x 11 paper with name, age and school to the Youth Service Department at the East Providence Public Library’s Weaver location (41 Grove Ave. East Providence, RI 02914) by November 1. All entries will go on display at the library for one week of voting to be announced at a later date.

Chess Club
The Riverside Branch Library Chess Club will begin the fall chess series on Tuesday, September 30, 2008. Members, ages six through eighteen, will learn how to play chess or improve their skills. The Chess Club will run for five weeks on Tuesdays from 3:30 to 4:30 P.M., beginning September 30th and ending October 28th, 2008.

Money Talks
Let’s talk money in this interactive workshop! You will learn how to track your spending, save money, identify problem spending areas and find out how credit works. Also learn how advertising influences your spending choices and how you can improve your shopping skills. The presenter, Sheryle McMillan is an Education Specialist for Consumer Credit Counseling Services, a division of Money Management International. This past year, Sheryle facilitated 140 financial education workshops in RI and CT. This workshop takes place Monday, September 29th at 3:00pm at the Riverside Branch Library

Game Day
Play a game and have a snack on Thursday, Sept. 25 at 3pm at the Fuller Branch Library.

Locker magnets
Make a magnet for your locker on Wednesday, September 10 at 3pm at the Rumford Branch Library.

The Weaver Library (41 Grove Ave. East Providence, RI 02914) has planned a week of drama related activities for students in elementary through high school (grades 3-12) for the week of April vacation (April 14-18). The schedule is as follows:

Monday, April 14-THE STAGE AND PERFORMING
An introduction to the structure of a stage and how to use the space for performance through activities and some improvisation.
Session I- 10 – 11:30 a.m. 3rd-6th grade
Session II- 12 – 2:00 p.m. 7th-12th grade

Tuesday, April 15-STAGE MAKEUP
Apply and use stage makeup to create different characters. The library will provide face cream, and soap. Please bring your own towel.
Session I- 10 – 11:30 a.m. 3rd-6th grade
Session II- 12 – 2:00 p.m. 7th-12th grade

Wednesday, April 16-STAGE COMBAT
Learn and practice basic stage moves-how to fall, punch, slap, kick, pull hair, drop and roll-and incorporate them into a brief improvisation.
Session I- 10 – 11:30 a.m. 3rd-6th grade
Session II- 12 – 2:00 p.m. 7th-12th grade

Thursday, April 17 –IMPROVISATION
Practice and perform various improvisations while critiquing and improving them.
Session I- 10 – 11:30 a.m. 3rd-6th grade
Session II- 12 – 2:00 p.m. 7th-12th grade

All classes will be taught by instructor Judy de Perla. Ms. de Perla’s involvement with youth and theater began in Brazil in 1975. Since then she has consistently been involved in extracurricular theater activities with middle and high school students, and more recently, with the elementary ages. Space is limited. Call 435-1978 to register for the classes of your choice. Depending on interest, students may be limited to two classes each.

Make Holiday Cards for the RI National Guard

Thursday, December 6 from 2-4pm we'll be making holiday cards to send with care packages for RI National Guard members stationed in Iraq. This qualifies for two hours of community service.
